Picnic Cake

Yield: 8 Servings

Ingredients: 
1 c Pitted Dates (Chopped)
1 c Hot Water
1 t Baking Soda
2⁄3 c Shortening
2 Eggs
1 c Sugar
1 t Vanilla
1 3⁄4 c Flour
1⁄2 t Salt
1 T Chocolate Cocoa
1 c Chocolate Chips
1 c Pecans (Choped)
Instructions: 

Combine DATES, hot water and baking soda and let set. In another bowl, cream together shortening, eggs, sugar and cocoa. Add to the cream mixture, alternating with the DATE mixture. Mix into the batter half of the chocolate chips and half of the pecans. Sprinkle the other half of each on top of the batter before baking. Bake in a greased and floured 9x13x12 inch pan at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes.
