As one of our softest, creamiest of our organic date fruit, the delicious Barhi is a popular favorite varietal. The fresh date fruit is almost round and amber to mahogany brown when ripe. The flesh is thick, soft, smooth, and translucent and the flavor is rich, and delicate. The excellent flavor of the fruit has already given the Barhi in the Coachella Valley a reputation equal to that in Basra. This is an exceptionally fine date fruit. Barhi Date's deliciously sweet flavor has earned it the nickname of the "honey ball" date; and it is also, well-known for its similarity to caramel and butterscotch flavors.
Atypical Barhi dates are unique because of its fruit which has superb eating qualities in more than one stage of growing (khalal, rhutab and tamar stages). Barhi Date Fruit changes color from a brilliant yellow to amber and finally to a reddish brown in the ripening process. These fresh dates are California grown!
One outstanding organic date is the BARHI. In 1913, Barhi Date fruit was introduced from Basra, Iraq. The meaning of the name is possibly associated with the hot summer winds ("bahr") at Basra. In 1946, there were approximately 900 Barhi palms, all in Coachella Valley. Many of the Barhi grown at Oasis Date Gardens are harvested and sold in the Khalal stage ofripening. In this stage the Barhi is bright yellow and crisp like an apple, with a sweet astringency that makes it a true delicacy.
Barhi is estimated to represent about 1% of total date production in the world. The shape of the broadly ovate to nearly round khalal fruit is usually distinc tive, because of a more or less abrupt, wedge - shaped taper from the middle to the bluntly pointed apex. An unusual character of the fruit is the relative absence of astringency or objectionable tannin flavor in the khalal stage.
This date palm tree fruit variety is grown in the Coachella Valley, USA, certified organic, and has all the health benefits of dates:
Khalal fruits are harvested by cutting bunches, leaving the fruits attached.
