Dayri date is a semi-dry date fruit from southern Iraq. Dayri are named for Dayr, a place where a convent is located. Therefore this date fruit is called "The Monastery date."
Dayris have a strong flavor and are large and luxurious like the Medjool, but less sweet. Its fruit is almost black when ripe. These fresh dates are California grown!

History
The Dayri Date was first imported in 1913. This date fruit is another semi-dry date fruit from southern Iraq, named for Dayr, a place where a convent is located. Therefore it is called "The Monastery date."
As the palms came into bearing here in the United States, the variety began to attract some attention because of the size, color, and quality of its fruit. In 1946, there were estimated to be about 200 Dayri palms in Salt River Valley, 125 in Coachella Valley, and 100 in California near Yuma, Ariz.
