Dayri Dates originating in Southern Iraq

The Dayri Date was first imported in 1913. This date fruit is another semi-dry date fruit from southern Iraq, named for Dayr, a place where a convent is located. Therefore it is called "The Monastery date."

As the palms came into bearing here in the United States, the variety began to attract some attention because of the size, color, and quality of its fruit. In 1946, there were estimated to be about 200 Dayri palms in Salt River Valley, 125 in Coachella Valley, and 100 in California near Yuma, Ariz.

Today, we grow Black McGill Dates here at Oasis Date Gardens.
